What finish should I choose?

For cast iron dutch ovens, you have two choices: seasoned cast iron and enameled cast iron. If you are an avid outdoor cook, a traditional, seasoned cast iron Dutch oven may be the best choice for you. These pots are more durable than enameled pots and can withstand high temperatures when planted in a bed of blazing hot coals. They also have a rough texture that's perfect for roasting; however, like traditional cast-iron frying pans, they require careful cleaning and seasoning.

For those more accustomed to cooking on the stovetop, an enameled cast iron Dutch oven may be a better fit for you. The glossy coating on an enameled Dutch oven means less sticking, easier cleaning, and no seasoning. However, the coating can also scratch and chip, so be careful when handling the pan. Be gentle when placing the lid on the pan and avoid using metal utensils, as they can scratch the interior.

Fortunately, you can find Dutch ovens of almost every size at Sarchi, so cooking one or 10 of them is no problem at all. While we like round Dutch ovens because they fit nicely on almost any stove burner, oval-shaped Dutch ovens have their perks. While they are not a good choice for stovetop cooking because of their shape, these pans are a smart choice when roasting a large chicken or baking a loaf of bread in the oven. finex, a cast iron cookware company based in Portland, Oregon, can even make an octagonal Dutch oven if you are interested in adding an interesting piece to your collection.

Regardless of which shape or size Dutch oven you are considering, we recommend that you pay attention to the handles of the pan. Why? Because you want to be able to safely lift and transport the Dutch oven with your bare hands and while using the hand guard. Larger handles will be easier to grip and allow room for oven mitts and pot holders.

The cast iron dutch oven is available in a variety of sizes, with most sold in 5-quart to 6-quart enameled Dutch ovens. This size pan is easy to handle and, if compatible, it will fit comfortably on most stovetops as well as in the oven. It's also the perfect size for singles, couples and families. It can prepare almost any dish you can throw at it.

Experienced cast iron dutch ovens are available for indoor use (be careful if there are legs), but are suitable for campfire use.

Cast iron dutch ovens come in many different shapes and sizes and vary in cost, but all have one thing in common: they're affordable!
